We have started work on upgrading the thermal efficiency of a barn conversion.
This barn conversion was done around 10-15 years, back then, the requirement under approved document part L of the building regulations. stated that the requirement for insulation was much less than it is now. The reason for this work is that the building is currently very expensive to keep warm. This building will not perform to the calculated values for the current insulation, due to poor installation of the insulation.
The existing ceiling insulated with 50mm of insulation
Below are examples of the existing insulation, poorly fitted. Large gaps in the insulation and the space between the insulation and plasterboard will cause the insulation to underperform
The stunning views from this property
The solutions to improve the environmental performance of the building:
The client has opted to have a biomass boiler fitted
The roof insulation will be upgraded
One gable-end will be rendered with an insulated render system
Two of the internal walls will be internally insulated.
The floors are to be insulated for both sound and heat

It seems a shame to have to demolish what looks so nice, to improve the performance of the building.
